Making Small Improvements
Flooring

The type of flooring you choose is just as important as the colour you decide to paint your walls, and can be one of your largest home investments.

First of all you need to plan, taking into account the area you’re looking to cover. For example, is it a well-trodden area, such as a hallway, or is it an area that gets wet, such as a bathroom or kitchen?

All flooring types have plus and minus points. Whilst wooden or laminate flooring looks clean and is certainly aesthetically pleasing they can sometimes be slippery. And whilst ceramic, stone and tiled floors can look beautiful, they can sometimes feel cold and hard, especially in the winter.

In light of the UK’s changeable climate, carpet is probably one of the most popular flooring options and as such presents you with many choices. As with all flooring types you need to think about feel, colour and usage – for example, pure wool can wear less well than a mixed fibre carpet.

It’s also seriously worth considering paying someone qualified to fit your flooring. There’s nothing worse than having spent time and money on choosing the right flooring for your house, for it to be spoiled by poor fitting.

Remember:
  • Think about the use the area gets that you are re-flooring and make sure your chosen flooring is suitable for the job you need it to do.
  • Shop around and compare prices.
  • Consider paying a qualified fitter. Don't be tempted to lay the floor yourself, unless you are skilled in doing so.
  • Think about how best to pay for your new floor.
