Making Small Improvements
New Furnishings

As the second most popular home improvement (according to a survey by Halifax plc), the introduction of new furnishings can completely alter the look and feel of a room.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, buying new furniture is particularly popular among the younger generation and those living in their first home.

Before you set off shopping, think carefully about the room that your new piece of furniture will live in and its use. For example, are you looking for a new occasional sofa, or one that will withstand heavy duty family use?

There are other practical factors. Many stores have a lead time on delivery, sometimes of several months, and may also charge you for delivery on weekends. You also need to consider the size of the item you’re buying. Make sure it’ll fit the space in mind and also that you can get it through the front door!

It’s also important to think about your budget. It may be that you need to borrow some money for larger items, so it’s worth doing some window shopping to get a good idea of the sort of cost of the item that you’re looking for. The internet is a great source of information and can offer some good online deals. It may be that you’re happy to splurge on some items, but will look to save on others. Either way, it’s good to set yourself a budget and then stick to it. Don't forget that certain items and shops will have sale periods (especially at the start of the year) so this can be useful in getting a great deal.

Remember:
  • Be clear about what you would like.
  • Ensure your new furniture is suitable for the use it will get.
  • Think about whether your new piece of furniture will fit into your existing decorative scheme.
  • Make sure your new furniture will fit in your house.
  • Ask about delivery times and charges.
  • Decide on your budget and how you’ll pay for your new items.
  • Ask the store about warranties or guarantees.
  • Don't forget the sale periods.
