Making Big Improvements
Garden Landscaping

As the old adage goes, first impressions count, and your front garden will, in most cases, be the first thing visitors (or potential buyers) see before they get to your front door. On this basis, 'kerb appeal' is an important factor in creating a positive impact.

As for back gardens, well they can offer an ‘outside room’ in good weather and add considerably to the enjoyment of your home life.

If you’re thinking about changing the layout, look or use of your garden, it’s worth thinking first of all about why you’re changing it. Is it because it needs to be more child friendly? Or do you want a strategically placed patio or decking area to use on sunny days? It may just be that you consider your garden ‘boring’ and would like something nicer to look out on.

When you’re considering the type of changes you’d like to make, you need to think about where the sun is during different times of the day so that any seating, play or planted areas you’re planning to introduce are getting the right amount of heat and light at the right times.

Think about employing a professional design company if you’re looking to make wholesale changes, particularly if you’re not ‘green fingered’. They should be able to offer plenty of ideas on how you could change your garden for the better. Or, if you’re wanting to get stuck in yourself, most DIY stores offer a raft of information on garden landscaping along with all the equipment you’ll need.

Remember:
  • Think about what the main use for your garden will be when you're planning the changes.
  • Take a look at other gardens in your area. Are there any ideas you could borrow from neighbours?
  • Talk to local garden design and landscaping companies. Even if you don’t choose to use them, they may come up with some creative ideas.
  • Decide on a budget for your garden project - it can be easy to get carried away buying expensive, unsuitable plants and garden equipment.
  • Think about how you’ll finance any big changes you want to make to your garden.
